The perfect watermelon lemonade recipe for a warm summer day! A refreshing mixture for parties and events all summer long!
Summertime!! I live in northern Canada, where the summer months are short-lived. I have to make the most of every minute! Gardening, playing baseball, camping – it doesn’t matter what we are doing, there are classic recipes in this home that get made every year, and this one definitely tops the summer list. It’s refreshing, delicious, and thirst-quenching! It’s the perfect Watermelon Lemonade.
When I say that we have short summers in our neck of the woods, I mean that we have veeeery short summers. We live so far up north that we only have a few months of summer. The saving grace is that we also have crazy long days. I’m talking sunshine from 4am until midnight at the peak of summer! It’s probably my favourite thing about living this far north. But long days of sunshine means lots of activity, lots of rest, and lots of thirsty family members!
We don’t usually drink anything but juice in our home (I know… sounds crazy!). We stick to water and milk. But on hot summer days when the kids are playing in the sprinkler for hours, and we’re BBQing outside, water just doesn’t always cut it!
Having a cool juice to drink in the summer is a real treat! That’s where this watermelon lemonade recipe comes in. It’s our drink of choice around here and a great alternative to traditional lemonade!
I’ve found that the mini watermelons are perfect for this recipe because they are already seedless, but I often end up using half of a huge watermelon because even with a family of five we don’t usually finish an entire watermelon! Just be sure to fish out all the seeds first if you use a big one because we don’t want those blended into the drink.
Do you have a drink that you think of every summer? One that your family used to mix up? Are you getting thirsty just thinking about it right now? lol. This Tropical Slushie is that drink for my husband, but this Watermelon Lemonade is that drink for our kids! I’m convinced that they will be making it for their kids, and their kids will be making it… it’s just a pass down recipe!
How good does this look?! I’m drooling just thinking about it! Yummmm….
Here’s the Watermelon Lemonade Recipe:
- 8 cups seedless watermelon
- 2 cans frozen lemonade
- 4 cups water
- 1 tbsp sugar (optional)
- 4 kiwis, peeled and cut (optional).
- Place watermelon in blender. Cover and blend until smooth.
- Place frozen lemonade and water in a large pitcher. Add watermelon and mix well. Refrigerate until ready to serve.
- If you want to add the optional kiwi mixture, put kiwi and sugar into a blender. Cover and blend on medium speed until smooth. Freeze 1-2 hours before serving.
- When ready to serve, pour watermelon mixture into glasses and spoon a dollop of frozen kiwi mixture on top. Enjoy!
Don’t be surprised if you find yourself mixing up double batches of this stuff! My kids could drink a whole pitcher on one warm day (and HAVE in the past! lol).
The little watermelon garnish on the side is just for fun, but totally a fun choice! If you choose to use the kiwi alternative recipe, a kiwi on the side would look great too! Or the classic mini tropical umbrellas :)
Add Kiwi or Make an Adult-Friendly Version
You probably noticed I also gave instructions for an icy kiwi version. If you like the kiwi flavour, or you’ve ever had anything with watermelon and kiwi mixed, you will definitely love adding kiwi to your drink. It’s delicious! Just add a dollop of your frozen kiwi mixture to the drink. The flavours blend perfectly.
Although, I didn’t mention it in the recipe… you can also make a adult version of this summer treat. I’m not the only one looking for adult versions of summer drink, right?! Just as with any other summer punch, you can add a shot of your favourite mixing drink, like Vodka or Gin.
If you’re looking for another refreshing summer drink, try this Tropical Slushie (which also comes with an adult version!)
