When I go to the Dollar Store, I always pick up enough items to do several DIYs, and then spend an afternoon getting creative and trying out all of my different ideas. They don’t all turn out, but usually I end up with at least a few that I love, and these simple DIY Wood Christmas Ornaments were definitely a win.

Our dollar store always has a few great wooden items and when I found these little wooden ornaments I had to pick them up. I think they are typically intended for kids crafts, but they can quickly and easily be modified to look chic and adult! I also picked up some wooden letters and numbers, and then some wired black jute string.

Wood Ornament Tutorial

This project was super simple and you can make a whole set of modern wood Christmas ornaments in less than 30 minutes. It would also be a great project to do with kids if they wanted to join in!

adding letters to wood Christmas ornaments

This DIY is as simple as gluing some letters or numbers onto an ornament. I used my favourite fast drying glue to glue the letters in place (also better for kids so they don’t burn fingers and it still dries quickly!).

You can put on any of the typical Christmas sayings or personalize them with special days, years, or events! Here’s a few examples:

  • Traditional Christmas words like Joy, Peace, Love, Noel, etc.
  • Names of family members who make their own
  • Family last names
  • The year
  • “1st” for a first Christmas
  • “Home” for the first year in a new home

the possibilities are endless. But I love the simplicity and the minimal, modern look of having just a few numbers of letters stick out from the ornaments.

I also replaced the red ribbon with something that blended into the modern look a little more, and used the black wired jute string that I had picked up at the dollar store. You could paint them if you want to, but I wanted them to be the natural wood so I left them unfinished.

I just love how these look on our Christmas tree!
