One Room Challenge {Week 2}: Master Bedroom Design Plans

Beautiful design plans for a modern master bedroom retreat. LOVE the grey, black and blue palette!

Why are we doing this to ourselves?! Last week I announced that I’m jumping back into another One Room Challenge. Linda at Calling it Home challenges us to completely redesign a room in our homes in just six weeks. I’m one week down and I haven’t done a single thing…. eek! Not looking good for us, lol. So why are we doing this to ourselves. I just LOVE the challenge! Six weeks (five now, lol) is not very long at all, especially when you have big Master Bedroom Design plans like these… let me explain…

Finding Your Style is hard! This is a blogger's story about finding her style and beginning her 3rd Master Bedroom design.

In case you missed the before photos, our master bedroom looked something like this ^^. But a couple of months ago, we started a master bathroom renovation, and now our bedroom looks something like this ….

Finding Your Style is hard! This is a blogger's story about finding her style and beginning her 3rd Master Bedroom design.

This week we’ve been working hard to get the bathroom done and move all of the tools and furniture piled up against the wall.

And now for the part everyone is waiting for…. the DESIGN PLANS!

Once the bathroom is done (or almost done), our first step will be to paint the walls. We are continuing the paint from the bathroom, which is my favourite white colour: Frost by Behr.

The next step is to strip the old wallpaper. Since I still LOVE the idea of a wallpapered feature wall, I’m re-wallpapering with this beauty

As soon as I saw this wallpaper, I HAD to use it! The pattern is stunning! I’m SO in love with it. I’m a bit worried that it will be too overpowering for my bedroom (my husband is more worried than I am), but with the rest of the walls white, I’m thinking the bold pattern will work.  I’m keeping my fingers crossed! Hoping that I can’t go wrong with a beautiful print, right?!

Then there is the matter of the rug… We’ve always had a fluffy white rug in the room, but it’s quite worn out now and definitely needs replacing. My plan is to layer these two beautiful rugs.

This champagne jute rug on the bottom…

And this gorgeous blue patterned rug on top (it’s much smaller than the jute rug). Have you layered rugs before? This is another first for me, but I can’t wait to see how it looks.

I’m swapping out headboards, for something similar in style to this one. Tufted and grey. Then I’m swapping out sheets too, for these perfect light grey ones.

I can’t update update the entire room without updating the main light fixture! I wanted something bold and exciting (think bars in different directions), but my husband refuses to live without a fan. Finding a great light fixture, with a fan is actually not that easy! We found this matte black one and I felt like I struck gold! lol. A fan that looked nice? How can that be?! lol.

As for bedside tables… I don’t have much of a choice. I’m out of budget, and likely out of time, so I’m going to go ahead and paint these old side tables one last time (after stripping the chalk paint off…). My favourite black paint should do the trick :)

Then there are a few accessories I’m eyeing for the room… A beautiful hanging planter, a tall planter (that may become a blanket basket), and a small blue planter.

I’m hoping I can add a bit more colour to the room with some reds or purples too, just as accents, but those likely won’t come into play until the last minute.. so you’ll have to wait!

Oh, one more thing… we are also updating this corner by adding new brick facade instead of a tiled fireplace :)

Because I’m an obsessive list maker, I’ll share our 5 week to-do list with you…

  1. Paint walls
  2. Strip old wallpaper
  3. Put up new wallpaper
  4. Buy rugs
  5. Get new duvet
  6. Get new fan
  7. DIY some throw pillows
  8. Strip and paint bedside tables
  9. DIY new handles for bedside drawers
  10. DIY artwork
  11. Print photos for frames
  12. Strip fireplace tile
  13. Put up fireplace brick
  14. Refinish fireplace mantel

That’s do-able… right?! Right… ? Wish me luck!

  1. I had to giggle when I saw the photo of your bedroom midproject…ours looks very similar as our bedroom has become the storeroom for all the paint supplies, and piles of items to sort through in our decluttering/home restyling we are in the middle of! We’ve learned to negotiate the piles even in the dark if we have to get up in the night. Hopefully soon we can sort, discard, organize, then begin to paint and restyle that room.
Love your inspiration board, and I’m ❤ing it so I can pick up a few of those items too. Good luck with completing your challenge. I’ll be following along.

  2. Loving your design for the space! I like the idea of layering the rugs. I want to try a rug over my carpet in my bedroom, but haven’t tried yet…scared!

  3. Top notch as always my friend! I’m head over heels for that wallpaper. I can’t wait to see it all in place. I’m also jonesing after your ceramic choices – I’d buy those too!

  4. Loving this design plan! I wanted to go with black accent fixtures, but it would have ended up too busy. My husband also insists on a ceiling fan in our bedroom. If only there were more beautiful options out there, right? You definitely found a gem with that black one.

  5. Everything you have chosen so far looks gorgeous – with that fireplace and all of it together, it will be such a calm and cozy space! Can’t wait for the reveal!

  6. I’m curious what application you use to create your mood boards. Love the inspiration for your room!
    Thanks

    1. Thank you so much! I actually just use a free online tool called PicMonkey.com. I just save all of my photos to my desktop, and then upload them as overlays (butterfly icon) and put them in place – super easy! If you have any questions feel free to ask!

  7. I love the wallpaper and rug! We have layered rugs (pattern over jute) in our living room and I think its a great look! You’ll love it!

  8. That rug is incredible — and what a stylish fan!? I love your design elements — right up my alley in terms of color palette. Can’t wait to see more!

  9. Love the plans! I think the wallpaper will look good….guess you’ll never know until it is up there! Don’t worry about being a week behind, you got this! This is the first year I am participating and I don’t know what got myself into. At least I am just tackling my home office! :-)

  10. With a bathroom renovation in toe as well you guys have a lot on your plate. I love what you have come up with for the design. It seems as though you have created a space that eludes hygge.
