Picnic in a Mason Jar

Mason Jar 2

Last year, I went through the entire summer without ever having a picnic. My daughter may have been a bit too young to enjoy it last year anyway, but this year she’s a mobile year-and-a-half year old, who loves the outdoors, and I was determined to share more time with her outside! I took no time at all to prep our Picnic in a Mason Jar outing, and couldn’t have been happier with the outdoor meal!

Three Mason Jars

I made one jar for each of us! Although, let’s be honest… everyone shared jars! Ellie ate my hummus, daddy ate her cookie, I ate her blueberries. Sharing is caring, right!?

Mason Jar Decorated

First off, like all good DIYers, I had to decorate the jars! I started by grabbing some chalkboard wood slices that I made last year, and attaching them with jute string as tags.  Then I grabbed some leftover napkins, and a matching washi tape roll and covered the mason jar lids with washi tape before attaching the napkins to the side of the jars.

Then came the fun part! Stacking the mason jars with picnic food. Nothing fancy here, just traditional picnic goodies. I put the food I wanted eaten first on the top.

Here’s the adult jar I made:

Here’s the kids’ jar:

If you’re wondering what was at the top, it’s a old fruit juice container! I washed a few of them and they fit PERFECTLY into the top of the jar, separating the dips and gooey snacks from the rest! You could throw a salad in the fruit cup dish, or the dressing, or some juicy fruits, or you could throw the original fruity snack on top! It should rest right on the lip of the jar, and the mason jar will still close snuggly on top :)

My little girl loved every minute of this outdoor meal!

Eating

And since you can’t have a picnic without drinks… I also filled a huge mason jar with orange juice, grabbed some wide-mouth mason jar daisy lids, and made our own jar cups too :)

Caught in the act! Stealing the last cookie from the bottom of the jar… lol.

Hope you liked our picnic idea!
There’s still time before the weather gets cold. Grab some mason jars and head outside with your family and friends for a meal!
