One Room Challenge {Week One} – Modern Industrial Guest Room

As part of the One Room Challenge, we are tackling our guest bedroom. This is week one. Check out our inspiration for creating a modern industrial guest room.

Before we attempted to tackle the modern industrial guest bedroom, last fall, I took part in one of the craziest blog challenges there is. I started (& completed!) my daughter’s Big Girl Bedroom as part of the One Room Challenge at Calling it Home. When I say it was crazy, I mean craaaay-zeee! The challenge is to completely redesign any space in your home in only 5 weeks, and then to share the big reveal on week 6.

We managed to get it done last year, but 6 weeks is definitely a tight timeline for a renovation! Call me crazy, but we decided to try it again. This time around we are tackling my guest bedroom, and it is NOT going to be a quick fix! We are going to turn the space into a modern industrial guest room.

Guest bedroom before the modern industrial guest bedroom makeover.

The original guest bedroom

Here are some unaltered pics of our guest bedroom in its raw state. Eeek! It’s a basement bedroom with dark walls, dated lighting and carpets, and bedding from my husband’s university days. Definitely a candidate for a room refresh!

There’s a great pony wall along the outside walls of the bedroom. Previously, it has only been used as shelving…but I have some other ideas to really take advantage of it!

You can see that when it’s not in use, the room primarily acted as a catch-all for our junk that has no home. :)

In this space, my main goals are to brighten it up and make it cozier and more inviting. I decided I wanted to do an industrial style guest room because I LOVE the style. I’m pretty sure my entire home will one day have a modern/industrial vibe.

My inspiration behind a modern industrial guest bedroom

Once I had decided on industrial, I immediately looked to my Industrial Ideas Pinterest Board. I’ve pinned SO many great decor and furniture ideas to this board—I knew it would inspire me right away!

That’s when I saw this beautiful colour palette….

This Colour Palette by Design Seeds is my major inspiration for the room. I LOVE the raw industrial inspiration for the colours and the neutral palette. As soon as I saw this, it became my jumping off point for the perfect modern industrial guest room design!

Brick wallpaper is perfect for a modern industrial guest room

I love the idea of installing some faux brick in the room. This Brick Wall Mural by Walls Need Love would be the perfect addition!

Neutral bedding and a metal bed frame in the modern industrial guest bedroom.

I LOVE this Atlee Coverlet Set for a guest bedroom. So easy to wash and keep clean after guests stay, and so easy to layer for warmer days.

Industrial inspired lighting in the modern industrial guest bedroom.

I really want to add some industrial lighting to the space, and incorporating these industrial pendants on either side of the headboard, would be the perfect solution!

Minimalist rug for the modern industrial guest bedroom.

We are hoping to lay down new flooring, and get rid of that old outdated carpet. Since it’s a basement guest room, we NEED to add a rug to help keep the toes warm. I LOVE this Moroccan Shag Rug and I think the colour and pattern would be perfect in the space!

Shelving for the modern industrial guest bedroom.

Finally, since we also need something other than just a bed in the room, I would love to incorporate a piece of furniture like this beautiful sideboard from Restoration Hardware. I’m hoping to make a piece, but with only 5 short weeks, I may not be able to pull it off!

I have the same pony wall on the 2 outside walls in our basement guest room but mine are not trimmed with wood. I will be very interested to see what you have in mind for them! We repainted the room last spring, added wood trim to the closet opening and window. The wire shelving unit in the closet was replace with a tower and rods. The floor and baseboard still need to be done (in the entire basement) but the changes made a huge difference.
