One Room Challenge {Week One}: Eclectic Big Girl Bedroom

Big girl bedroom inspiration

I’m SO excited to be sharing that I’ve been taking part in the One Room Challenge, hosted by Calling it Home. For those who haven’t heard of this challenge, you can read more about it here. Basically, we have six weeks to completely transform a space in our home. For us, the choice was a no-brainer. We had a baby on the way, and we had six weeks before our due date (eek!). I don’t know why we procrastinated SO much, but we did, and we’re re-thinking those decisions now… lol. Since we already completed a neutral Gray, Yellow, and Navy Nursery when my first daughter was born, we figured we would put the new baby in the nursery again, and create a new Eclectic Big Girl Bedroom for our daughter. I hope you enjoy following along as we transform this space!

Here’s our blank slate. The former office, now dark and empty, with a few massive holes in the walls.

Not much to be desired… when we first moved into this home, this room became an office, which was just another word for throw-everything-in-there room. Now that it’s been emptied out, I see SO much potential again!

I like to define my style as Eclectic and Modern. I like to take inspiration from all different design avenues and blend them into a modern design. That’s essentially the approach I’m taking to my daughter’s room… eclectic, modern, and cute? lol. *Styles may vary throughout six week transformation*.

Here’s where I’m finding my inspiration:

I made this inspiration board ^^ with a few ideas I found and fell in love with. I’m hoping to keep the room light and airy, full of pink, gray and gold tones.

The beautiful fabrics in the inspiration photo can be purchased from the online Canadian fabric retailer Nuts for Bolts. I’m hoping to use some of these same fabrics to make my own curtains, duvet cover, and pillows (there’s a first for everything right!).

I’m also planning to use this Clouds Allover Stencil by Cutting Edge Stencils to create a beautiful feature wall for the room.

pinks and grays

Finally, the colours in this picture by Better Homes and Gardens really captures the different shades of pinks I want to incorporate into the room.

Since, I’m a list-a-holic, here is our lengthy six week “to-do” list:
[wish us luck!]

  • Paint walls (including closet walls)
  • Paint baseboards, main door, and closet doors
  • Paint stencil feature wall
  • Purchase and install closet organizer
  • Cut, install, and paint crown molding
  • Find thrifted dresser and re-paint/re-design it
  • Find thrifted mirror to re-paint
  • Purchase and assemble bunk bed
  • Find/make pastel accessories
  • Sew curtains
  • Sew duvet cover, pillow cases, and throw pillow covers
  • Find light fixture
  • Create art work for DIY gallery wall
  • Help Ellie (my daughter) create art work for her space
  • Find a chair for her/me to read in
  • Find rugs for space
  • Make DIY bedroom hooks
  • Possible DIY night stand
  • Possible DIY bookshelf
