Modern Bathroom Renovation {Week 2}

Demo day! WOO HOO! Who doesn’t love a good renovation demo. Last week I showed you the plans for our Modern Bathroom Renovation. I’m going to be giving weekly updates until the project is completely finished – which I’m hoping is only 6-8 weeks?! That’s a tight timeline, but we reaaaally want our bedroom back, so we’re motivated! I’m going to share our demo plans as well as one GREAT tip that will SAVE you time and money in the long run!

Last week I promised that I’d recap the layout. The BIGGEST reason that we wanted to renovate the bathroom, was to get a bigger shower. We had this short little square one with a huge frame and we really wanted to expand it. The only way to get the extra space we needed was to renovate the closet first, and move the door to the other wall, beside our bed.

This ^^ is the after layout. You can see that we got rid of any wasted space from that little closet hallway. We expanded the shower and created a little spot for future built-in shelving (still to come!). The closet was finished last fall, and has a beautiful sliding barn door in front of that opening now.

Since all of the structural changes are done, it was time to rip the place apart! lol.

We started by taking down all of the shelves and racks, and ripping off the tile around the vanity.

Then we had to rip out the tile and frame around the huge tub and take down all of the tile on the wall. Basically we just hammered all over the walls – if I had any frustrations that day, they were all gone by the time this demo was done!

Because we were replacing floor tile, we needed to rent a Tile Stripper from the Home Depot to remove it all. We could’ve hammered is all ourselves, but we could choose to pay for four hours with this guy, and it took less than an hour to remove all of the floor tile – SO worth it!

And since you can’t move tile easily in a garbage bag, we used these buckets to remove everything from the room.

There is one simple tip I tell everyone when they ask about doing demos: Package and label EVERYTHING!

I know that this sounds simple, but it’s SO easy to get caught up in the excitement of a renovation, pulling off trim, unscrewing shelves, etc. and we just throw all the “keeps” in a pile until we need them again – but then it’s impossible to find what goes together if it’s not labeled!

We use small baggies to piece together all of the hardware. Even if it’s just going in a garage sale pile!

We also label all of the trim and baseboards – bathroom angle piece, FPR (which means fireplace right). You will thank me later!

So here’s the room, all demo’d and ready to be put back together!
