How to Make a Modern Closed Terrarium

Make this DIY Modern Closed Terrarium in less than five minutes! Plus three different ideas to fill your terrarium. The perfect five minute project for spring!

Welcome to another month of #10minuteDIYs! If you’re new here, last month I joined with some very talented bloggers to start a series on projects that take less than 10 minutes! I have a tendency to overcomplicate things… lol. It was time to start making projects that require a few less tools, and a lot less hours! Last month we shared projects to help organize our home, and I shared this nifty organizer for my office. This month we are sharing planter projects, and I’m going to show you how to make a Modern terrarium.

If you’ve never heard the term terrariums, they are essentially closed little gardens in a glass case. Often they are filled with soil and rocks, but I took an even easier route than that… lol.

I found this lantern at a local thrift shop for about a dollar, and immediately saw potential in it. I loved the cylinder top with all of the little holes in it.

Perfect desk organization idea! Love the rustic industrial vibe. Perfect for my office, or my teen going off to college!

ALL I did for this project, was grab black spray paint, remove the glass, and spray the lantern a new, sleek, shiny black!

It looks like a completely different piece! I couldn’t really fill this lantern with a bunch of rocks and dirt, or I’d never be able to open the door and water the plants. So instead, I have three other solutions that I rotate though…

1. A small potted plant! I had this little zebra plant in here until it out-grew the terrarium (I must be getting better with plants if I kept it alive!)

2. Air plants! These little guys just need a spritz of water every few days so they can sit in there and look pretty without any rocks or soil.

3. Faux plants. Less desirable, but also less maintenance. You can keep a faux guy in there forever! Still looks adorable :)
