Have you decorated your hallway before? For most people it’s the last space that they tackle, if they tackle it at all! We are decorating a hallway for the first time. Previously all I did with an empty hallway was maybe put a couple photos on the wall or a few hooks. This time I’m actually decorating. So I’ve been scouring the online world for inspiration, and now I’m sharing the hallway decorating tips I’ve learned!

What you place on your walls can make a huge difference in the way a space feels. Whether you gravitate to a gallery wall, a large statement piece, or a mirror with character, they can all add colour and personality when decorating the hallway – without breaking the bank. A beautiful hallway wallpaper or a feature painted wall can also act like wall art when it adds personality to the space!

Impactful Lighting

One of the most common things we heard when we were selling our previous home, was that the potential buyers loved all of the custom lighting. We chose original light fixtures to suit each space because of the major visual impact they can have, and hallway lighting is the same. There usually isn’t anything else near the ceiling, so it’s the major focus in drawing the eye upwards. Don’t play it safe – chose the light fixture that will make your guests say, “Whoa! That’s a cool piece!”. Along the same lines, funky bulbs, like the ones in this fixture, can have a great visual impact too!

Most hallways are also have a functional element to them. We need that console table to drop our keys, that bench for our purses, or those closets for our linens. But function doesn’t have to sacrifice style. Opt for a more stylish storage option like a mid-century modern console or some beautiful hooks!

Rugs can make or break a space. Rugs provide a great balance from those beautiful light fixtures you chose when you’re decorating a hallway! They also can bring in colour, and some much needed texture. Whether you have a narrow, wide, or very long space, there are hallway rugs that can fit those spaces – just be careful about materials, because you don’t want those rugs slipping and sliding all over the place! My favourite sources for hallway rugs are Ebay and Wayfair.

Greenery

If you ask me, greenery should be a key component of every room, including the hallway! Whether it’s real or faux (my black thumb and I won’t judge! lol), a beautiful looking plant can add life to a space, basket planters, small plants on shelves, and hanging planters are all great options!
