We have snow on the ground! This officially marks the start of the holiday season for me. I now have full permission to post all of the holiday-related things! Every year I make a new wreath – it’s not always for the front door, but every year I make something new to decorate with. This year I decided to try my hand a a giant DIY pine wreath! I used branches foraged from our own property and I love the natural elements in this wreath! I’ll share exactly how I made it.

Over the years, my wreaths have gotten more and more minimal (as has the rest of my decor! lol), like this five-minute wreath. But this year my husband is making me switch things up again….

When we were putting away Christmas decorations last year, he said he missed the traditional red and green Christmas. I asked him if he wanted me to use red and green next time, and he immediately said “Yes!”. So here I am, adding more red to my decor than ever before.

The traditional colour scheme had me wishing I had a few other more traditional elements too, like a big pine wreath! So I decided to ditch my minimalist leanings for now, and try my hand at a Foraged Pine Wreath! I actually was inspired by my friend Jo-Anna from Pretty Life in the Suburbs for this wreath idea! She made a beautiful large wreath one year, and I loved the idea of making my own, so here’s my somewhat simplified take on one!

Materials and Tools Needed for Your Pine Wreath

I got the biggest base of grapevine wreath I could find. At about 32″ it’s too big for our front door, but I love how big it is! It would look perfect on a garage door or shed!

When it came to greenery, I decided to search around our property a bit. We live on an acreage, so we have a lot of pine trees, but we happen to have some cedar bushes too, so I was able to grab a little bit of each type of greenery.

How to Make Your Own DIY Pine Wreath

I started by arranging my greenery. Since my pine branches were so much larger than my cedar ones, I decided to layer the pine branches on the bottom and the cedar branches on top.

How to add new pine branches to wreath

In order to hide stems, I would just “tuck” them into the branches that I’ve already laid down, as you can see in the photo above.

Having the stems stick out ruins some of the cohesiveness for me, so I try to keep them tucked away.

Using Floral Wire to attach branches

When you are ready and happy with your design, use floral wire to attach your branches. I cut my wire into 4-5″ strips and attached them with a simple tie, and then hid the ends or snipped them off.

I honestly didn’t pay that much attention to trying to make it all perfectly symmetrical or tucked in. I wanted it to be free-flowing and natural. I wanted to let this natural wreath stay perfectly imperfect, just like the tree it came from!

Adding branches to wreath with floral wire

I often find that as I’m adding layers to my wreaths, I need to hold them upright to get a good idea of how they will actually look when gravity works its magic on the branches. It helps me see which branches need to get tucked in or tied down a little more.

how to add pinecones to wreaths

When I was happy with the greenery, I added a few pinecones as well to the center. Simple wrap your floral wire around it, tucking it in as you go, and tie it onto the grapevine wreath in the same way that you added your pine branches.

You can finish the wreath off with ribbon bow if you like! To be honest, if I had a larger, wired ribbon, I would’ve done a huge bow on this guy! But I just didn’t have any in my craft stash, so I made this smaller red one, and let the ribbon tails hang down low to balance it all out.

Our Finished Giant DIY Pine Wreath

I love how this turned out! It’s perfectly imperfect, and made with real greenery, and will be absolutely beautiful on our garage door!
