DIY Geometric Planter

Make this modern geometric planter for any corner in your home. Love the industrial chic flair to this home decor project idea!

Last month, the lovely Sarah from Flourish and Knot challenged a few bloggers to create something for their home, without spending a dime. Yep – using things we already had. For someone with a big craft stash, this can still be difficult! lol. We’re so used to just going out and getting those thing we need – like a planter! My plant had outgrown its pot. I was going to go out and buy a pretty new one, when I heard about this no-spend series, and I thought that it would be the perfect way to test my frugalness!

When I needed a planter, I went around the house scoping out possibilities. A basket! But that was too easy… no DIYing necessary. An old pot! But it was too small.  This galvanized steel bucket is one that I’ve had lying around the house for a while. I never really had a purpose for it, so I thought it might work perfectly!

I already had these geometric patterns for my Platinum 6 Machine, and figured that they would be the perfect way to add character to my shiny new bucket.

Spellbinders Platinum 6 Machine
Hexagon Etched Die Cut
Black Vinyl
Gold Vinyl

You can totally use your end-of-the-roll vinyl scraps for this project! I had some old gold and black that I pulled out :) Cut your pieces so that they fit onto the cutting boards, and roll them through the Platinum 6 Machine.

The vinyl was a little bit thick to cut, so I went back and forth a few times until the cuts went through. I cut three black hexagons out, and one gold one to use as accent pieces!

I wasn’t really sure what I was going to do when I started, I just knew I liked the shape! Once I had them stacked on top of one another, I liked the look.

I just used a few gold shapes as accents for the bucket.

When I was done, I liked it so much that I almost didn’t use it as a planter at all, lol. LOVE the black and gold combo, and LOVE the geometric design!

I still may transfer it outside with some perennials this summer, but for now, It’s holding the plant I needed to transplant :)

Now I just need a better stand for my planter… maybe that’ll be my next no-spend project!

Such a cute idea! I have a few galvanized buckets I was planning to use as planters in the spring - this has inspired me to jazz them up!

So I've been on the fence about buying one of these types of cutting machines... And I think you've got me convinced! I love how your planter turned out!

Sweet, you have all the coolest gadgets! I love how you added such a cool design to a plane jane galvanized pail, very clever! I'll have to start looking at my plane Jane buckets, I love the way this turned out.
