Add a modern wood holder to your home for your firewood using scrap wood. This DIY fire wood rack is an easy beginner project for indoor log storage for your fireplace.

We had some 2×2 scrap boards in the garage for a long time. I’m not even sure what we got them for originally, but they’ve just been sitting in our shop for a little while and my plan was to turn them into a DIY decorative fire wood rack to put next to our fireplace.

When the city cut down one of our trees, they left us with a bunch of the wood. I decided a nice stand for the winter would be a really pretty decor piece. We have a gas fireplace, so I’m not actually using the wood, but just adding it to the room for the texture and look of warmth.

I love to use scrap wood to make modern home decor for our home. This project is super easy to make and totally FREE to us using the wood from our scrap wood pile. Even if you have to buy the wood to make this project, it would still be very inexpensive to make.

How to Make a DIY Fire Wood Rack

Supplies

• 2×2 scrap wood
• Wood glue
• Pocket hole screws
• Kreg Pocket Hole Jig
• Black Paint
• Miter saw
• Sander

Step-by-step Tutorial

I started by sanding down all the 2x2s. I wanted them as smooth as possible so that when I painted them later they would have the look of metal even though it’s just made out of pine.

Once I had everything sanded, I had to decide how tall I wanted my piece. Just based on the look, I decided to go with three feet. I also decided to make it 2 feet wide and 12 inches deep. I marked the 2x2s and cut them on my miter saw.

After finishing my cuts, I had four 3 foot pieces, four 12 inch pieces, and three 2 foot pieces.

Next, I drilled pocket holes to join them all together. Some of the wood pieces are slightly smaller, so I set my pocket hole jig to 1 1/4 inch and I set my drill to 1 1/4 inch. I put pocket holes on both sides of my 12 inch pieces and on all sides of my 2 foot pieces.

Once everything was cut and your pocket holes drilled, lay it all out to make sure that the pocket holes are facing downward. I attached everything together drilling into those pocket holes and using wood glue to hold it.

I built both of the rectangular frames first that were 2 feet by 12 inches, then I used the adjoining 2 foot pieces to attach both rectangles to make the frame of the wood holder. The third 2 foot piece will be placed 12 inches down from the top on the back side side to help secure everything and hold it together.

Once everything was attached I got ready to prime my DIY fire wood rack. I chose to paint it instead of staining it because I wanted this piece to look like it was made of metal. I primed everything first then I got to work painting it black.

Here is what my firewood stand looked like when it was all done. I put it in the living room beside the fireplace and I love it!

I honestly think there are a few imperfections that make you know it’s wood and not metal, but from a distance, it passes as metal.

It looks like a big purchase piece and I’m really happy with it! For me, this project was completely free because it was scrap wood, but even if you were to make and buy the pine boards and cut them down it still would be a very affordable project.

Can you use this DIY Fire Wood Rack Outside?

Yes! If you are looking for an outdoors version, this wood rack will definitely work outdoors as well.

To use a wood rack outdoors, you need to make sure you are using products that are safe for outdoor wear and tear, whether staining or painting.

If staining, I would suggest a black ebony gel stain and a few coats of polycrylic so that everything is well protected. If you would like to paint it, be sure to use an exterior paint that is water resistant.
